PLY to STL / 3MF

Convert mesh PLY files that already have faces into printable STL or 3MF. If the file is points-only or a Gaussian splat, Obloid routes it instead of doing a dumb format swap.

Mesh PLY vs scan PLY

A mesh PLY already has faces, so this converter can export STL or 3MF directly. Point-only scans and Gaussian splat PLY files are different jobs and get their own converters.

Colored PLY

Vertex colors are detected and shown in the preview. STL is geometry-only, so download 3MF or GLB when you need to keep color.

Slicer cleanup

Scan meshes are captured surfaces, not CAD. After export, use STL Repair for watertight printing, then STL Cutter if the part is larger than the build plate.

PLY to STL FAQ

Can I convert a PLY file to STL for 3D printing?

Yes. If the PLY has vertices and faces, Obloid converts that mesh in your browser and exports STL, Bambu/Orca 3MF, generic 3MF, or GLB for slicer cleanup.

What if my PLY is a point cloud or a Gaussian splat?

Obloid reads the PLY header. Vertices without faces go to Point Cloud to STL. Splat properties such as opacity, scale, and spherical harmonics go to Gaussian Splat to STL instead of a broken format swap.

Are PLY files uploaded to Obloid servers?

No. Inspection and conversion run in the browser. Signing in only spends your export allowance when you download.

Should I export STL or 3MF from a mesh PLY?

Choose STL for a widely compatible single-material mesh. Choose Bambu/Orca 3MF when you want a plate-ready project. STL does not store vertex colors, so keep 3MF or GLB when color matters. Repair holes afterward with STL Repair.

How many free PLY to STL downloads do I get?

Free accounts get 1 download per converter. Plus and Pro unlock unlimited exports. Preview and conversion still run in the browser; signing in only spends the export allowance.
