Bold posters and portraits hold up after color reduction. Crop tight on the subject — busy backgrounds turn into blobs across the pieces.

Flat pieces are solid slabs with a flush photo inlay — the top stays smooth. Tactile stacks colors like the bookmark generator so the picture has relief. Neighboring pieces already have a 0.50 mm air gap so the tabs can lock after printing. Standard 0.50 mm matches typical FDM jigsaws; 1.00–1.50 mm is only if the first layer fuses pieces or you want a looser kids’ fit.

How to 3D print a custom photo puzzle

  • Flat is the default. Each piece is a solid slab. The photo is a flush inlay on top, so the face is smooth like a cardboard puzzle. AMS will mix filaments on those inlay layers — leave the prime tower on.
  • Tactile is optional relief. Same interlocking cuts, but colors stack as height bands the way the photo bookmark does. One filament per layer, swaps only at band boundaries.
  • Print assembled, then pick apart. Interlocking edges already have a 0.50 mm clearance — the usual FDM jigsaw range is 0.3–0.5 mm, and 0.5 mm is the tight step that still separates on the plate. Bump the piece gap to 1.0–1.5 mm if elephant foot welds the first layer. Let the plate cool, then lift from a corner.
  • Opaque filament. A 0.6 mm inlay covers the slab color with most PLA. Light filament over dark may need 0.8–1.0 mm. Matte prints read cleanest.
  • The Bambu / Orca 3MF loads as one object with one part per slot. Downloads use one of your 3 free exports per design; re-downloading the same design in another format is free. Assumed layer height is 0.2 mm.

Photo puzzle FAQ

How do I make a 3D printable puzzle from a photo?
Upload a photo, crop it to landscape, portrait, or square, pick how many interlocking pieces you want, then download STL or 3MF. Colors become filament slots.
What is the difference between flat and tactile?
Flat keeps a solid piece body with a flush photo on top, like a cardboard jigsaw. Tactile stacks each color as a height band so you can feel the image.
Will the printed pieces fit together?
Yes. Neighboring pieces have a 0.5 mm interlocking clearance by default. Raise the gap to 1.0–1.5 mm if the first layer welds pieces on the plate.
How many free downloads do I get?
Free accounts get 3 free exports for this tool. Plus and Pro unlock unlimited exports. Re-downloading the same design in another format is free.
